Cast vs extruded acrylic
Both are sold as Perspex or acrylic, but they behave differently under a laser:
- Cast acrylic engraves to a frosted white finish and cuts with a flame-polished edge. It is the best choice for acrylic sheets for laser cutting, signs, awards and anything engraved.
- Extruded acrylic is cheaper and more even in thickness, cuts cleanly with a glossy edge, but engraves clear rather than white and can crack around tight holes.

Colours, finishes, thicknesses and sheet sizes
Clear acrylic sheets are the bulk of sales, followed by opal white, black, mirror (silver, gold and rose gold), frosted, fluorescent edge-glow and a full colour range. Common thicknesses run from 2 mm to 10 mm, with 3 mm and 5 mm most used for laser work, and thicker blocks for displays. Standard full sheet sizes are 2440 x 1220 mm and 3050 x 2030 mm, and most suppliers will cut to size or sell half and quarter sheets to fit a desktop laser bed. Mirror acrylic should be engraved from the back with the coating protected.

As a 2026 guide, a 3 mm clear cast acrylic full sheet 2440 x 1220 mm costs about R900 to R1,500, 5 mm about R1,500 to R2,500, and 10 mm from R3,000 up. Mirror and colours cost roughly 10 to 40 percent more than clear, and extruded sheet is usually 15 to 25 percent cheaper. Cutting to size is often R20 to R60 a cut or included on larger orders, and delivery depends on distance, since full sheets need a bakkie or a courier that takes long boards.
