Laser cutting services by material

Laser cutting uses a focused beam to melt, burn or vaporise a narrow line through sheet material, leaving a clean edge with no tooling costs. Pick the closest page:

How the process works

The shop imports your drawing, nests the parts on a sheet to reduce waste and sets power and speed for the material. CO2 lasers (60 to 150 W) cut wood, acrylic, card, leather and fabric on beds of about 1300 x 900 mm or 1600 x 1000 mm. Fibre lasers (1 to 12 kW) cut sheet metal on beds of 3000 x 1500 mm and larger. The beam removes a kerf of about 0.1 to 0.3 mm, so tight-fitting joints need the kerf allowed for in the design.

Laser cutting cost in South Africa

Most laser cutting services price by machine time plus material. Machine time on a CO2 cutter is roughly R8 to R20 per minute, and on a fibre laser R15 to R45 per minute depending on thickness. Expect a minimum order or set-up fee of R150 to R500. Long cut lengths, thick sheet, many small holes and engraving add time. Supplying your own material can lower the cost, but ask first, as some shops only cut stock they know. Ask for a per-part price on repeat orders: once the file is set up, the second batch is usually cheaper than the first.

Files and lead times

Send closed vector outlines at 1:1 scale as DXF, SVG, AI or PDF, with cut lines and engrave areas on separate layers or colours. Remove duplicate lines, as they get cut twice. Standard jobs take 2 to 5 working days, while repeat production runs and signage are often scheduled weekly. Courier delivery is available from most shops, and many will check your file and flag problems before cutting starts.

What to include in your request

  • Give the material and its thickness
  • Attach a DXF, SVG, AI or PDF at 1:1

Frequently asked questions

Is LaserEngraver.co.za a laser cutting company?
No. We are a free referral service only. We pass your request to independent laser cutting shops near you, they send their own quotes, and you deal with them directly. There is no fee or obligation.
What is the minimum order for laser cutting?
Many shops cut a single part, but a minimum charge of about R150 to R500 is common. Ordering several parts on one sheet makes each one far cheaper.
How thick can a laser cut?
A CO2 laser handles about 12 mm wood and 20 mm acrylic. Fibre lasers cut mild steel up to 20 to 25 mm and stainless up to about 15 mm, depending on power.
Can I get cutting and engraving on the same part?
Yes. Shops usually engrave first and cut last on the same machine. Put engrave and cut lines on different colours or layers in your file. Engraving large filled areas takes far longer than cutting, so keep fills small to save cost.
