Buying a laser engraving machine in South Africa is easier when several suppliers quote on the same brief. LaserEngraver.co.za is a free quote service: you fill in one short form about the work you want to do, your budget and your space, and we pass it to independent laser machine dealers, importers and service technicians, who quote you directly. We do not sell, import, install or repair machines ourselves, and there is no fee or obligation. Whether you want a mini laser engraver for hobby projects or a desktop CO2 machine to start a business, one request gets you real prices.

Diode, CO2 or fibre: which laser engraver?

The right machine depends on what you will engrave most:

  • Diode lasers (5 to 40 W optical) are the small, affordable entry point for wood, leather, card and coated metal. They cut thin plywood slowly and cannot cut clear acrylic.
  • Desktop CO2 lasers (40 to 100 W) engrave and cut wood, MDF, acrylic, leather and glass, and suit most gift and signage businesses. See CO2 laser machines.
  • Fibre lasers mark bare metal, tumblers, tags and tools. See fiber laser machines.

Laser engraving machine prices in South Africa

As a 2026 guide, a 10 W diode engraver costs about R5,000 to R15,000, and a 20 to 40 W diode with enclosure and air assist about R15,000 to R35,000. A 60 W CO2 machine with a 600 x 400 mm bed runs about R45,000 to R90,000, and a 30 W galvo fibre marker about R35,000 to R70,000. Check whether the quote includes VAT, delivery, a chiller or water pump, an extractor, a rotary attachment and software licences, because these add up quickly.

Starting a laser engraving business

Many buyers start with a hobby machine and outgrow it within a year. If you plan to sell personalised gifts or corporate gifts, budget for a machine that cuts as well as engraves, a rotary for tumblers and glasses, and proper fume extraction vented outside. Ask dealers about training, local spares, warranty terms and whether they offer finance or rent-to-own. Lightweight imported machines with no local support can stand idle for weeks waiting for a part.

Safety, enclosures and extraction

Most engravers are Class 4 lasers when open, so an enclosed machine with interlocks and a filtered viewing window is far safer than an open-frame diode in a family home. Laser smoke from MDF, leather and acrylic is unpleasant and harmful, so plan for an inline fan or a filter unit. Never engrave PVC or vinyl. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and never leave a job running unattended.

Frequently asked questions

Does LaserEngraver.co.za sell laser engraving machines?
No. We are a free quote and referral service only. Your request goes to independent dealers, importers and technicians, they quote you directly, and you decide whether to buy. We hold no stock and charge nothing.
What is the best small laser engraving machine for a beginner?
For hobby work on wood and leather, an enclosed 10 to 20 W diode is a sensible start. If you want to cut acrylic or run a small business, a 40 to 60 W desktop CO2 machine is the better long-term buy.
Which software do laser engravers use?
Most diode and CO2 machines run on popular paid or free laser control software, while fibre markers ship with their own galvo software. Ask the dealer which program is included and whether training covers it.
Can I get a laser engraver near me with local support?
Yes. Say where you are on the form. Dealers in the main metros deliver nationally, and many offer on-site set-up, training and repairs. See laser parts and repairs for after-sales help.
