Wood laser cutting turns plywood, MDF, bamboo and veneers into precise shapes, joints and engraved pieces with no saw marks and no tooling. LaserEngraver.co.za is a free quote service: send one request with your design, wood type, thickness and quantity, and we pass it to independent laser cutting shops and makers near you, who quote you directly. We do not cut wood ourselves and there is no cost to you. Whether you search for laser cutting wood near me in Cape Town, Durban or a smaller town, one form reaches several shops.

Which wood works best for laser cutting

  • Birch plywood (3, 4 and 6 mm): light colour, strong, the favourite for kits, boxes and decor
  • MDF (3 to 9 mm): cheap, flat and consistent, ideal for painted pieces and laser cutting on MDF signage, see MDF board
  • Bamboo and solid hardwood: coasters, boards and gifts, best for engraving rather than thick cuts
  • Veneers and pine: inlays and rustic pieces; resinous pine chars more

Construction plywood with heavy glue lines cuts poorly, so most shops prefer laser-grade boards.

Laser engraving for wood

Laser engraving wood gives a warm, permanent brown mark, from fine line art to photo engraving. Light woods such as maple, birch and bamboo show the most contrast. Deep engraving and vector scoring can be combined with cutting on the same job. Many shops also offer paint-fill, staining and a protective oil or lacquer finish, popular for personalised gifts and cutting boards.

Thickness, edges and kerf

A typical 60 to 100 W CO2 laser cuts 3 mm plywood in one fast pass and 6 mm in a slower one; 9 to 12 mm is possible but leaves darker, slightly tapered edges. Expect a kerf of about 0.15 to 0.25 mm, so finger joints and slots need allowance. Edges come out caramel to dark brown; masking tape on the surface stops smoke staining around engravings. A light sanding cleans edges where needed. Plywood can warp slightly in humid coastal air, so store sheets flat and ask the shop to cut from fresh, flat stock for close-fitting kits.

Wood laser cutting prices

As a guide, cutting 3 mm MDF or plywood costs about R8 to R18 per machine minute plus board. A full 600 x 900 mm sheet of 3 mm birch plywood costs roughly R120 to R220. Small decor shapes in bulk often come to R6 to R30 each. Send a DXF, SVG, AI or PDF, and allow 2 to 5 working days, or a little longer over the busy year-end gift season. For large or painted jobs, see laser cutting and laser cut signage.

Frequently asked questions

Will LaserEngraver.co.za cut my wood project?
No. We are a quote referral service, not a workshop. Your request goes to independent wood laser cutting shops and makers nearby, who quote you directly. You choose who to use, and our service is free.
Is plywood or MDF better for laser cutting?
Birch plywood is stronger and looks better unfinished. MDF is cheaper, flatter and better if the piece will be painted. Both cut cleanly at 3 to 6 mm. MDF edges are darker and leave more soot, so a quick wipe is needed before painting.
Can I supply my own wood?
Often, yes, but it must be flat and laser safe. Avoid treated, painted or melamine-coated boards, as some coatings release harmful fumes. Ask the shop first.
Are laser cut wooden items food safe?
Solid hardwood and bamboo boards are fine once cleaned and oiled with a food-safe oil. MDF and plywood glues are not meant for direct food contact.
