Laser cutting screens turn steel, aluminium or timber sheet into decorative panels for privacy, shade and security. LaserEngraver.co.za is a free quote referral service: you describe the screen, gate or wall art on one form, and we pass it to independent laser cutting shops, engineering works and steel fabricators who quote you directly. We do not cut, fabricate or install anything ourselves, and there is no fee or obligation to accept. Patterns range from botanical and geometric designs to abstract shapes drawn for you.

Where laser cut screens are used

  • Patio and braai area privacy screens, freestanding or fixed between posts
  • Laser cutting gate panels for driveway and pedestrian gates, often welded into a steel frame
  • Balustrade infills for stairs, balconies and pool fences
  • Window and air-conditioner screens, and pergola or carport side panels
  • Room dividers and feature walls in timber, MDF or aluminium
  • Laser cutting wall art, from African animals and proteas to abstract designs
  • Facade cladding and shopfront screens for commercial buildings

Materials and finishes

For outdoor use, metal laser cutting in 2 to 3 mm mild steel with zinc primer and powder coating is the most common and affordable choice. Corten steel weathers to a stable rust patina, but it can stain paving, so plan drainage. Aluminium is lighter and will not rust, which suits coastal areas such as Durban and Cape Town. Indoors, wood laser cutting in plywood or MDF board gives painted or natural screens at lower cost. Powder coating adds roughly R150 to R350 per square metre.

Prices, sizes and designs

As a guide, a powder coated mild steel laser cutting panel costs about R1,200 to R2,800 per square metre, aluminium R1,800 to R3,500, and corten R1,800 to R3,800. Dense patterns take longer to cut and cost more. Standard sheets are 2,500 x 1,250 mm or 3,000 x 1,500 mm, so larger screens are split into panels. A full laser cut driveway gate with frame and motor bracket is typically R12,000 to R40,000. Supply a DXF or SVG file, or ask for design work from about R500 to R2,500.

Frames, fixing and lead times

Thin sheet needs a welded frame or folded edges to stay flat and rigid in wind. Ask whether the quote covers framing, galvanising or primer, powder coating, delivery and installation. Gates need hinges, stops and openings sized to your motor. Most screens take 2 to 3 weeks including powder coating, and longer in the busy months before December. Ask for a scaled drawing showing the pattern across all panels so joints line up, and check how the screen will be fixed to brick, concrete or steel posts. For entrance signs cut from the same steel, see laser cut signage.

What to include in your request

  • Give the width and height of each screen
  • Say if it is for indoor or outdoor use
  • Attach a pattern or describe the design
  • Choose the material and finish wanted
  • Say if framing and installation are needed

Frequently asked questions

Does LaserEngraver.co.za make the screens?
No. We are a free referral service. Your request goes to independent laser cutters and steel fabricators, who quote you directly and handle design, cutting, finishing and installation. There is no fee or obligation.
Will a laser cut steel screen rust?
Mild steel will rust unless it is primed and powder coated, ideally galvanised first at the coast. Corten rusts on the surface by design, while aluminium does not rust at all.
Can I use my own pattern?
Yes. Send a vector file, or a clear image the cutter can trace. Very fine details under about the sheet thickness may be simplified for strength.
How thick should a metal screen be?
For most patio screens and balustrade infills, 2 to 3 mm mild steel or 3 mm aluminium is enough with a frame. Gates and freestanding panels often use 3 to 5 mm.
