MDF board (medium density fibreboard) is the cheapest, most predictable sheet material for laser cutting, shopfitting and furniture. Thin laser MDF cuts quickly with a CO2 or diode laser and takes paint well, while 16 mm board is the workhorse for cupboards and displays. LaserEngraver.co.za is a free quote service: you list the thickness, sheet size, finish and quantity, and we pass it to independent board suppliers near you, who quote you directly with MDF board prices and delivery. We do not sell or cut board ourselves, and there is no fee or obligation.
What is MDF board?
MDF is made from fine wood fibres pressed with resin and wax into dense, even sheets with no grain or knots. It machines and cuts cleanly in every direction, paints smoothly and is cheaper than plywood. The downsides: it swells if it gets wet unless you buy moisture-resistant grade, it is heavy, and edges need sealing before paint. For a laser, the even density means one setting cuts the whole sheet, which is why it dominates wood laser cutting and laser cutting wood sheets for crafts.
MDF board sizes and thicknesses
Standard MDF board sizes in South Africa are 2440 x 1220 mm and 2750 x 1830 mm, with some suppliers stocking 2800 x 2070 mm. Common thicknesses include:
- 2.5 to 3 mm: laser MDF for ornaments, cake toppers, puzzles and models
- 6 mm: signs, boxes, letters and sturdier laser work
- 9 to 12 mm: backs, panels and routed signs
- 16 to 18 mm: cupboards, shelving and display units
Most suppliers will cut full sheets into strips or panels to fit a desktop laser bed, and many sell offcuts cheaply. Ask for laser grade MDF where available, since it has fewer hard spots and gives cleaner, more consistent cuts.
MDF board prices
As a 2026 guide, 3 mm MDF in a 2440 x 1220 sheet is about R180 to R320, and 6 mm about R280 to R480. A 16 mm MDF board price is roughly R550 to R850 a sheet raw, more for 2750 x 1830 and for white or woodgrain melamine faced board. Cutting is often R10 to R25 a cut, and edging extra. Birch plywood is the main alternative for laser work: stronger and nicer on the edge, but about two to four times the price of MDF.
Raw vs melamine, resin and fumes
For laser cutting, buy raw MDF. Melamine coated board cuts poorly and gives off unpleasant fumes. All MDF releases resin smoke when lasered, so good extraction and an air assist are essential, and the cut edges turn dark brown. Pair it with a CO2 laser machine or a diode laser engraving machine, and see laser parts and repairs for fume extractors.
